DEUTERONOMY OUTLINE INTRODUCTION: The name of this book in Hebrew is "Haddebharim" which means "The words." The word Deuteronomy comes from the name of the book in the Greek LXX. Two words meaning "second law," derived from a phrase in Deut. 17:18. It is not, in reality, a second giveing of the law, but rather an exposition of the law for the generation about to enter into the "Promised Land." AUTHORSHIP: The book, aside from the preamble (1:1-5) and the closing remarks concerning the death of Moses (ch. 34), are from the hand of Moses. (see 1:5; 31:9,22,24; also 1 Kings 2:3; 8:53; 2 Kings 14:6; 18:12; Jesus testifies to Mosaic authorship in Matt. 19:7,8; Mk. 10:3-5; Jn. 5:46,47) There are 100 quotations and allusions to Deuteronomy in the New Testament. Dr. Sidlow Baxter says that the five books of Moses, known as the Pentateuch, are a Bible in miniature. "In Genesis we have the ruin through man's sin; in Exodus redemption by "blood" and "power"; in Leviticus communion on the ground of atonement; in Numbers direction by the guiding will of God; in Deuteronomy destination through the faithfulness of God." (Explore The Book, p. 209). Baxter also points out the fact that Deuteronomy is a book of transition. It is a transition to a new generation; a new possession; a new experience; and a new revelation - the revelation of God's love. The central message of the book is God's faithfulness. I.
